5 Causes of Male Infertility

Sep 27, 2022

Male infertility refers to the inability of the man to conceive a child even after concerted effort. According to the National Infertility Association, approximately 12% of men aged 25-44 experience some kind of fertility issue. So if you've been having fertility issues, you can take comfort in knowing that you're not alone. This is a frustrating situation for most people, but it can be helped with the treatments available at your local fertility center. Producing healthy sperm depends on several things, and some issues may arise that may prevent the sperm from traveling or growing. Below are some causes of male infertility.

Disorders

Many males experience problems with their reproductive system, like making and developing sperm. Sperm may lack growth and can be improperly shaped, while some may not travel through the reproduction system correctly. Disorders that cause these problems can be a result of genetics or of lifestyle decisions like smoking and alcohol. Other conditions, such as kidney failure, hormone imbalance, and chromosome issues, may lead to abnormal growth of sperm.

Varicoceles

This refers to the abnormal swelling of the veins in the scrotum. These swollen veins can reduce the growth and movement of sperm through poor blood drainage. The testicles may get too warm to make sperm, causing the low production of sperm. In rare cases, varicoceles can lead to blood flowing back to the scrotum.

Retrograde Ejaculation

This situation occurs when semen returns to the bladder instead of coming out of the body. This mostly happens during orgasms when your nerves and muscles fail to remain closed. Retrograde ejaculation is mainly caused by medication, nervous system issues, and surgery. Some signs of this condition include cloudy urine after ejaculation or even dry ejaculation.

Immune Responses

Occasionally, men's bodies produce antibodies that threaten their own sperm. Antibodies are commonly created to fight diseases after you get injured or infected, but they can also prevent sperm from moving or functioning normally. Antibodies can make it difficult for sperm to move from the male reproductive system to the oviduct.

Medication

Some medications can impact the standard functionality of sperm. These medications are usually administered to treat arthritis, blood pressure, cancer, or depression. If you suffer from any of these conditions, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you medication that's fertility-friendly.
